Definition and Scope of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery

Cranio-maxillofacial surgery is a highly specialized field that focuses on the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the skull, face, and jaws. Due to the complexity of this region—which includes the brain, eyes, cranial nerves, and essential anatomical structures—this specialty relies on close collaboration between multiple disciplines such as Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Speech and Audiology, Orthodontics, Radiology, and others.

This multidisciplinary integration allows surgeons to address medical challenges that cannot be solved by one specialty alone, enabling innovative and comprehensive treatment approaches.

Why the Egyptian Society of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery Was Established

The Egyptian Society of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery (EG-CMF) was founded to unify and develop this vital specialty in Egypt. The Society aims to:

  • Set and advance standards of clinical practice in cranio-maxillofacial surgery

  • Promote multidisciplinary collaboration to achieve optimal patient outcomes

  • Support surgeons in the management of facial injuries, tumors, and congenital anomalies of the skull and face

  • Enhance education, training, and scientific research within the specialty

  • Strengthen national, regional, and international collaboration

Through these efforts, EG-CMF works to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, and innovative care for patients across Egypt.

The establishment of EG-CMF represents the natural evolution of cranio-maxillofacial surgery in Egypt, a specialty that originally developed under the umbrella of the Egyptian Society of Plastic Surgeons, founded in 1962. As the field expanded in scope, complexity, and clinical responsibility, the need arose for a dedicated scientific society focused exclusively on cranio-maxillofacial surgery. In response, EG-CMF was established in 2024 as a branch of the Egyptian Medical Association, serving as the official and sole representative of cranio-maxillofacial surgery in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
